Friction ridge examination is commonly practiced as ACE‑V: Analysis, Comparison, Evaluation, and Verification. NIST's Expert Working Group on Human Factors in Latent Print Analysis, together with the OSAC Friction Ridge Subcommittee, documented this method as a six-phase process map (Administrative Assessment, Technical Assessment, Latent Analysis, Known Analysis, Comparison/Evaluation, and Reporting/Verification). The platform's latent print examination template is structured around these same six phases, so an agency's documented ACE‑V workflow is captured directly in the case record rather than on a separate paper worksheet.

1Administrative Assessment

Case screening and case-acceptance decisions are logged at intake, establishing whether a latent print examination request is accepted before analysis begins.

2Technical Assessment

Evidence intake and an initial technical assessment of the latent impression(s) are recorded, including substrate, development method, and pre-analysis notes.

3Latent Analysis

Feature assessment and a suitability determination for the latent impression are documented — the ridge detail an examiner identifies before any comparison takes place.

4Known Analysis

The known (exemplar) impressions considered are recorded, along with a separate suitability determination for those known prints.

5Comparison / Evaluation

Feature comparison, the weighing of similarities and dissimilarities, and the examiner's rendered conclusion are captured against the analysis record that preceded them.
